Spring is in the air!

The FBI’s FOIA policy allows you to get the file of anybody who is deceased, so I filed a request to get all documents mentioning Russell Tyreese Jones, aka Ol’ Dirty Bastard, aka ODB, aka Big Baby Jesus, member of the Wu-Tang Clan hip hop collective, who died in 2004 of an accidental drug overdose, a lethal mixture of cocaine and the prescription drug Tramadol, a synthetic opiate.

The FBI responded with 94 pages of police reports, court proceedings and news clippings, which cover an assortment of crimes perpetrated by and against ODB

Today in 1992, Nirvana performed at the NBC Studios for ‘Saturday Night Live’ in New York, NY!  The band French-kissed during the live end-of-show credits, the credits were then re-taped. All rebroadcasts use the re-taped credits. Earlier in the day, while Nirvana was backstage at the NBC Studios, ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic calls up Kurt and asked if he could do a parody of “Smells Like Teen Spirit”, Kurt was ecstatic and agreed as he was a big fan of ‘Weird Al’.  “Nevermind” also went straight to #1 knocking Michael Jackson’s “Dangerous” off the top spot.

Alice in Chains - Brother

Universal Techno is a very fine French documentary from 1996 on Detroit the techno music scene - it’s birth in the 1980s and its massive International influence right up until the moment.

Drawing inspiration from Giorgio Moroder, Gary Numan, Kraftwerk, Devo and Parliament Funkadelic, Detroit-based electronic musicians Juan Atkins, Kevin Saunderson and Derrick May developed a style of club music that, with its monolithic beats and mechanical funk, seems to have naturally risen out of the metal and concrete belly of a once grand city.

Part of what makes Universal Techno exceptional is in the way it gets at the roots of the music and its ties to the environment that spawned it. With grim fascination we watch as Derrick May walks through the ruins of the once magnificent Michigan Theater describing its former glories. But in the midst of the decay, music generates a sense of a future yet to be lived.
